The Diets for Patients with Breast Cancer during Chemotherapy

Many patients with breast cancer will have a certain cycle of chemotherapy. However, in the process of killing tumor cells, chemotherapy will also cause some side effects such as decreased immunity, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, decreased leukopenia, etc., affecting the normal conduction of chemotherapy. Therefore, we should pay attention to conditioning diets during chemotherapy, physical recovery, and strengthening the immune system, thus successfully completing the chemotherapy

1. The nutrition should be adequate. Patients with breast cancer generally are weak, so we should appropriately increase the intake of protein and sugar during chemotherapy, and eat less high-fat and high-cholesterol foods. In particular, we should ensure the intake of protein and eat some lean pork meat, beef, chicken or fish, etc.; not to eat fried foods and eat less pickled food; not to eat strongly irritant foods. Pay attention to diet diversification; match meat with vegetables; keep acid-base balance; pay attention to the color, smell and taste of foods. Anorexia patients can eat appropriate hawthorn, radish, kumquat and other food benefiting the stomach, thus increasing the appetite of patients.

2. Eat more foods being rich in anti-cancer compounds. Studies have shown that the following types of foods have a preventive effect for breast cancer patients.

(1) Cabbage, Chinese cabbage, and wild cabbage contain anti-cancer substances indole-3-methanol, which can prevent carcinogen-induced tumor cells in vivo, inhibiting tumor growth.

(2) Garlic and onions contain allicin, which can block the synthesis of N-nitrosamines; it also contains vitamin C, vitamin A and other ingredients, which can play a role of anti-cancer.

(3) Tofu, soy milk, bean sprouts and other soy products are rich in plant estrogens, which can competitively inhibit estrogen in the body and play a role of anti-cancer.

(4) Asparagus contains histones, which are proved to be can effectively control the growth of breast cancer cells. In addition, kelp, seaweed, tomatoes and other foods are rich in anti-cancer compounds, so regular consumption has some benefits for breast cancer patients.

3. Appropriately eat some fresh fruits. Fresh fruits such as watermelon, kiwi, apricots, apples, pears, strawberries are rich in vitamin C, vitamin B and other vitamins, which have a certain anti-cancer effect. Jujube not only contains hawthorn acid and other anti-cancer compounds, but also has a therapeutic effect on eukopenia and thrombocytopeniwhile caused by chemotherapy, so breast cancer patients can always eat jujube during chemotherapy.
